“Wow, You Work With Your Mum?”

“Wow, You Work With Your Mum?” – Why It Works for Us

Family-Run Real Estate Business One of the most common questions I’ve gotten in Real Estate, right after “how’s the market?” is:

“Wait… you work with your mum?” (yes I spell mum with a “u” as an ode to my British heritage).

I know some people have the experience of working with family in Real Estate. But a lot of people have no concept of working with family members. This question about working with my mum is usually said with a raised eyebrow, a smile, or a laugh. Some people even look slightly horrified, like they’ve just remembered a family vacation that ended in a shouting match.

Mothers and daughters are famous for having complicated relationships. Often, mothers and daughters know each other’s buttons (and how to press them).

Value-Alignment

But as a mother-daughter Real Estate team, it works. I like to tell people in response to their inquiry about working together… “we’re the same in all the right ways.” We have the same energy levels. We love people deeply. We’re problem solvers by nature. And we both approach the Real Estate business with the same philosophy: People first. Always.

I think many business partnerships break down because their values are too different. One person might value a hard day’s work, grinding it out regardless of efficiency. The other might value effective work and take off once the work is done. For me and my mum, our values align.

Our values are people-centric. We show up to each deal not just to negotiate or market a property (though we’re good at that), but to support people through a major life transition like buying their first home, selling the one they raised their kids in, or starting fresh after a hard season.

We’re both Dancers

Another reason it works is that we’ve learned how to dance. Yes, we both have a background in dance. I was in ballet for many years when I was young, and my mum was a contemporary dancer with a dance group. Like dance teams, sometimes we’re in step. Sometimes one of us wants to twirl and the other is still doing the cha-cha. But what makes our partnership special is that we’re always committed to the dance itself. We play to our strengths. We communicate (a lot). And we give each other space when needed.

There’s an honesty that only comes with time and trust, i.e., family. We can read each other’s moods, catch each other’s blind spots, and fill in the gaps without ego. It’s a rare kind of synergy that we don’t take for granted.

I trust my Mum

Lastly, in real estate, trust is everything. And when your business partner is your mother, there’s already a solid foundation built on decades of shared history. I believe that we can bring this built-in trust to our clients.

I know she’ll show up for our clients like she has shown up for me my whole life long.

She knows I’ll bring fresh ideas, energy, and perspective to the table.

We trust each other’s instincts, and that’s powerful in a business where every decision matters. My mum has poured years into building a Real Estate business rooted in service and care, she’s helped hundreds of people buy and sell a home in Kelowna. And now, I get to help carry that forward with her and some of my own vision and voice, while always honouring what she built.

We’re not just colleagues. We’re family.

We share not just a business name, but a purpose; we walk alongside people in some of life’s biggest moments.

So yes, I work with my mum.

And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Curious what it’s like to work with us? Whether you’re buying your first home or selling your forever home, we’re here for it all, together.
